The hip-hop world lost a legend on February 7, 2000, when Big Pun passed away at just 28 years old after suffering a massive heart attack. The Bronx rapper, born Christopher Rios, was a lyrical powerhouse, known for his rapid-fire delivery and intricate wordplay. His untimely passing was a devastating loss for hip-hop and the Latin community.
On that fateful morning at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in New York, Big Pun’s wife noticed something was terribly wrong. He was struggling to breathe and, in an unusual request, asked for eight glasses of water, despite his known dislike for it. Fearing for his life, she called an ambulance, even though he begged her not to. Before paramedics could arrive, he went into full cardiac arrest. His wife attempted CPR, but his body was shaking, his tongue had protruded, and excessive saliva made resuscitation impossible.
When emergency responders arrived, they faced challenges due to Big Pun’s size, as he had reached a peak weight of 698 pounds. They ultimately had to use a construction dolly to transport him to White Plains Hospital, where doctors were unable to save him.
In the days leading up to his passing, Big Pun had begun taking steps to address his health. His sister revealed that he had committed to stomach stapling surgery, and his wife had urged him to seek help. However, he insisted on finishing three songs before focusing on his health.
Big Pun left behind a wife and three children, along with a lasting musical legacy. His impact on hip-hop remains undeniable, with classics like "Still Not a Player" and "Twinz (Deep Cover 98)" continuing to inspire generations of artists. His talent, influence, and unforgettable presence will never be forgotten.
